New research by FitFlop has identified the UK’s least searched destinations for spotting deer during the autumn rutting season, with Powderham Castle Deer Park in Devon topping the list.
The analysis of 51 well known UK deer spotting destinations found that Powderham Castle Deer Park received an average of just 40 Google searches during autumn, despite being home to around 600 fallow deer. By comparison, Richmond Park attracts 748,000 autumn Google searches, a difference of more than 747,000.
Norfolk’s Holkham Hall and Estate ranked second, with an average of 50 autumn Google searches despite having approximately 500 deer roaming its grounds.
After summer’s record breaking heat brought a bumper year for spotting migrating insects such as hummingbird hawk moths and painted lady butterflies, autumn marks another season for nature lovers. The deer rut is a dramatic spectacle in which male deer compete for females, offering walkers an opportunity to see wildlife in quieter locations away from the UK’s best known deer parks.
The research highlights lesser known destinations offering a range of experiences, from encounters with rare white fallow deer at Great Wedlock Farm and Deer Park to spotting beavers at Holnicote.
Powderham Castle Deer Park, Devon
Powderham Castle Deer Park recorded an average of 40 autumn Google searches and is home to around 600 fallow deer. Set within the historic Powderham Estate, the Deer Park forms part of more than 150 acres of grounds surrounding the castle, which has been the Courtenay family home since 1391. Around 150 fallow fawns are born there each year.
Visitors can combine deer and wildlife spotting from the Rose Terrace with exploring the American Garden or walking through woodland to the Belvedere for panoramic views across the Exe Estuary. The estate also offers castle tours, family trails, and refreshments at its courtyard Shepherd’s Hut.
Holkham Hall and Estate, Norfolk
Holkham Hall and Estate recorded an average of 50 autumn Google searches. One of the largest destinations in the research, Holkham covers more than 3,000 acres of parkland and is home to a free roaming herd of around 500 fallow deer.
Visitors can learn to photograph the animals at upcoming Deer Photography Workshops hosted by Andy Langley. The estate also includes the 18th century Palladian Holkham Hall, a Walled Garden dating back to the 1700s, the interactive Holkham Stories experience, Woodland Play Area, Courtyard Café, cycle routes, and a lake.
Holnicote, Somerset
Holnicote recorded an average of 520 autumn Google searches and is home to more than 300 red deer. During the rutting season, the deer can often be spotted around Webber’s Post, Cloutsham Fields, Ley Hill, and the edges of Horner Wood.
The Holnicote Estate also offers the chance to see beavers, which have been reintroduced to the estate. Its landscapes include ancient oak woodland, coastal pine woodlands, and open moorland, alongside more than 150 miles of footpaths and bridleways.
Nearby attractions include the village of Selworthy, Bossington Beach, and Exmoor’s highest point, Dunkery Beacon, which provides views across to the Bristol Channel and Wales.
Great Wedlock Farm And Deer Park, Pembrokeshire
Great Wedlock recorded an average of 1,260 autumn Google searches. Spread across more than 175 acres of Pembrokeshire countryside, it is home to between 250 and 300 red, fallow, and white deer, with the latter being rare in the UK.
The deer roam freely across the organic grassland rather than being restricted to enclosed areas. The destination is particularly family friendly, offering a 2 mile park walk, guided safari buggy and VIP safari buggy experiences, a café, indoor cinema, pedal tractors, climbing and play areas, and an indoor putting course.
Dinefwr House, Carmarthenshire
Dinefwr House recorded an average of 2,020 autumn Google searches. It combines deer watching with Welsh heritage, spanning an 800 acre estate, a 100 acre medieval Deer Park, and a herd of more than 100 fallow deer.
The estate also features Grade II* listed Newton House, the ruins of 12th century Dinefwr Castle, and ancient woodland containing 400 year old oak trees. Families can also visit the Oak Yard play space, Newton House café, and second hand book shop.
The remaining destinations included Randalstown Forest in County Antrim, Parkanaur Forest Park in County Tyrone, and Chatsworth Park in Derbyshire.

Rutting deer are wild animals and should always be given plenty of space. Visitors should never approach, feed, or attempt to photograph deer at close range. During the rut, males can become particularly unpredictable, so walkers should follow the specific safety guidance issued by each destination.
As autumn brings wetter ground and leaves covering pathways, appropriate footwear can also help walkers stay comfortable and secure on woodland and park walks.
FitFlop’s resident biomechanist, Dr Kim Lilley, explains why grip is an important aspect of footwear during the autumn and winter months: “When the foot trusts the surface, the body will move more naturally and confidently. When grip is poor, walking gait slows down, cadence reduces, and the wearer will tend to stiffen their posture. Choose footwear that feels as if it works with your body, not against it. Comfort isn’t about the softest sole, it’s about enabling you to move naturally, confidently and efficiently throughout the day.”
