Four of the most popular winter sun destinations for UK travellers, Dubai, the Maldives, Zanzibar, and Jamaica, criminalise or ban same-sex relationships, according to ILGA World’s Database of Sexual Orientation Laws.
To help travellers navigate these risks, Adventure360 created the LGBTQ+ Winter Sun Travel Index. The index ranks 140 destinations using a score out of 100, combining climate and flight logistics with LGBTQ+ safety metrics. Legal protection and personal safety account for 50% of the overall score, while temperature, sunshine, flight time, direct UK routes, and time differences account for the remaining 50%. Each location also receives an independent safety grade of Safest, Safe, Caution, or Avoid based purely on its LGBTQ+ safety score.
How the index scores destinations
- LGBTQ+ Safety and Legal Protection (50% weighting): Evaluates legality, relationship recognition, discrimination protections, legal gender recognition, and societal acceptance.
- Temperature Comfort (20% weighting): Evaluates average daily maximum temperatures from December – February, favouring temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius.
- Sunshine and Dryness (10% weighting): Balances daily sunshine hours against average monthly rainfall.
- Flight Time from the UK (10% weighting): Rewards shorter journey times.
- Direct Flights from the UK (5% weighting): Prioritises year-round direct routes over seasonal options.
- Time Difference (5% weighting): Rewards smaller time differences to minimise jet lag.

Key travel trends and regional highlights
- Spain and Portugal: Spanish locations sweep the top four spots, led by Fuerteventura. Spain and Portugal together claim seven of the top 10 destinations, all reachable in under five hours via year-round direct UK flights. European countries make up 46% of the top 20.
- South Africa: Cape Town and Johannesburg both secure a safe grade with identical 8.40 safety scores, backed by a 1996 constitution that was the first in the world to explicitly outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation. While Cape Town scores full marks for legality and relationship recognition, its lower societal acceptance score of 4.0 places it in the Safe tier rather than Safest.
- Mexico and South America: Mexico offers two top 15 entries in Cancun and Tulum/Riviera Maya. South American destinations such as Uruguay and Buenos Aires offer the warmest Safest-graded options in the top 15, averaging 29°C during the UK winter.
Expert insights on LGBTQ+ travel safety
Jane McLellan-Green, travel expert at Adventure360, commented on the findings: “Working with travellers aged 18–30 means we have plenty of experience supporting LGBTQ+ young people. We created this index to support them, knowing that LGBTQ+ travellers have to consider everything from wondering whether they’ll get a funny look at hotel reception when they ask for a double bed to feeling nervous about whether their passport will hold up at immigration due to their gender identity. That is why we scored everything from discrimination protections and societal acceptance to legal gender recognition as their own factors, rather than folding everything into one overall number.”
“Thailand is the clearest example of why that matters. Marriage equality came into force in January 2025, and the country deserves every bit of the credit it has had for it, but there is still no law allowing anyone to change the gender marker on their official documents. It is a destination our travellers genuinely love, though I would always recommend transgender travellers read that particular detail properly rather than assuming a good reputation covers everything.”
“The Canary Islands ranked extremely well, but they’re more commonly known for relaxed hotel stays. Long-haul adventure travel for LGBTQ+ youth can be a little more difficult to navigate, so we’re incredibly pleased that our ranking has identified Uruguay and Mexico as excellent options further afield and most importantly, safe choices. Both are countries we would highly recommend visiting.”
