Demand for renewable energy careers is growing across the UK, with smaller cities seeing some of the sharpest increases in interest as students and families begin considering future career options during GCSE season.
A new analysis by Glow Green reveals that online searches for renewable energy careers have surged over the past year, particularly in regional cities outside the UK’s major metropolitan areas. The study compared data for more than 220 industry-related keywords across two consecutive twelve-month periods ending in April 2026
Truro recorded the largest increase in search interest, with searches rising from 230–300 per month, representing a 30.43% year-on-year increase. Portsmouth ranked 2nd with a 20.37% rise as average monthly searches climbed from 540–650. Chelmsford secured 3rd place with an 18.92% rise, followed by Peterborough at 17.78%, and Lichfield at 17.24%. Northampton also saw strong growth at 16.22%. Burnley, Norwich, Exeter, and Winchester rounded out the top 10, all recording double-digit increases.
Lloyd Greenfield, founder of Glow Green, said GCSE season is often the first time many teenagers seriously start thinking about their future careers, with parents becoming more involved in those conversations.
“What’s interesting about this data is that we’re seeing growing interest in renewable careers not just in major cities, but in smaller communities across the UK,” he said.
“Young people are increasingly aware that the transition to cleaner energy isn’t something happening decades in the future, it’s creating jobs right now. Whether it’s solar power, heat pumps, energy efficiency, or emerging green technologies, there are opportunities available across a wide range of skill sets and qualifications.”
Greenfield noted that the renewable sector offers students something increasingly important when choosing a career: the chance to work in an industry with long-term growth potential while making a positive contribution to society.
“We’re seeing more young people looking beyond traditional career routes and exploring industries that align with both their ambitions and their values,” he said.
The growing interest mirrors wider trends across the UK’s labour market. According to the Office for National Statistics, there were an estimated 652,100 full-time equivalent green jobs in the UK in 2024, representing a 27.8% increase compared with 2015. Government forecasts suggest the transition to clean energy could support more than 400,000 additional jobs by 2030.
Lloyd Greenfield said the findings reflect what is already visible across the wider green economy. “Green jobs are no longer a niche career path. As investment in clean energy continues and demand for skilled workers grows, more young people are recognising that renewable energy offers a career path with genuine long-term prospects.”
He added that multiple entry routes now exist, whether through university, apprenticeships, or vocational training, making renewable careers more accessible to the next generation.
While many people associate renewable careers with engineering and technical installation roles, the industry also offers opportunities in project management, sales, customer service, operations, marketing, finance, and environmental consultancy.
