Rock music has emerged as the most searched music genre in the UK, according to research by historically themed metal band Sabaton, which analysed Google search data over the past 12 months.
The study examined search volumes for terms such as [genre] music and [genre] playlist, deliberately excluding specific artists or songs to focus on genre interest across the UK. Rock leads with 44,986 monthly searches, outpacing all other styles.

Metal’s fifth-place ranking is notable given its limited mainstream radio airplay in the UK, where only a handful of dedicated stations regularly feature the genre.
Least searched genres
At the other end of the spectrum, instrumental music sits at the bottom with just 1,760 monthly queries, a figure often attributed to listeners using dedicated playlists as background noise rather than searching actively. Opera follows with 2,302 searches, then Gospel/Christian music with 2,454, World music with 2,767, and Soundtracks with 4,205. Rock receives over 25 times more monthly searches than instrumental music.
British roots run deep
The UK has a long connection to rock, with iconic acts such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Queen, and Led Zeppelin helping to define the genre globally. Electronic and dance music also trace deep British roots through styles like drum and bass and dubstep, which developed in UK clubs from the early 1990s onward.

Sundström continued: “Rock music’s enduring popularity in the UK is not surprising when you consider its deep roots in British culture, from the British Invasion of the 1960s to the New Wave of British Heavy Metal in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These movements influenced UK music and transformed global music culture.”
Sabaton is a five-piece heavy metal band from Falun, Sweden, formed in 1999. The group has released 10 studio albums and is known for its history-inspired music. The study used Google Keyword Planner for consistent, genre-focused volume estimates.
