Detailed rankings of the top 5 titles
Roblox (Fan Obsession Score: 100)
Roblox tops the list as the most addictive game. Every month, 332 million people look up game modes, updates, and content drops, which is more than Minecraft and Fortnite combined. Players stay active for around 2.5 hours per session.
League of Legends
Ranking second, a typical player spends 2 hours in each session, with single matches lasting around 30 minutes. The game boasts more than 60 million followers across social channels.
Minecraft
In third place, players average 70 minutes per session on their projects. Its Reddit community features over 8.7 million members swapping builds, while its YouTube channel holds more than 21 million subscribers. Released in 2011, it remains one of the most invested player bases in gaming history.
Fortnite
Fortnite commands the largest total online community in gaming, with nearly 130 million followers across YouTube, Reddit, and Discord. Driven by frequent live events and collaborations, daily sessions average about an hour.
World of Warcraft
Launched in 2004, World of Warcraft is the oldest title in the top five. It ties with Roblox for the highest average daily playtime at 2.5 hours per session, with more than 7 million overall viewers across platforms.
Why online games retain obsessive communities
The team behind Zero1 shared their take on the findings: “There’s a concept in gaming called ‘persistence,’ the idea that the world keeps existing even when you log off. Your builds are still there. Your guild is still running raids. Your friends are still talking on the server. It’s a big reason why games like Roblox, Minecraft, and World of Warcraft create such obsessive fandoms. And speaking of friends, researchers tracking MMO communities found that social connection (not gameplay mechanics) was the single strongest predictor of how long someone keeps playing a game. A large-scale study even found that 75% had made genuine friends through gaming, and 43% eventually met those people in real life.”
Roblox tops global video game obsession study due to high search demand, daily playtime, and strong community social connections.
