Research Reveals Least Crowded Family Holiday Spots for UK Summer Break

Quick summary: New travel data analyzing over 160 locations has identified the world’s least crowded peak season holiday destinations, helping families avoid severe resort congestion and school holiday price inflation. The findings reveal that smaller island communities such as Alonissos in Greece and El Hierro in Spain score highest for crowd avoidance, while the Isle of Harris provides a premier domestic staycation alternative. For public health and family well-being, choosing these low density destinations is a valuable step towards reducing the acute emotional stress of mass tourism and fostering genuine psychological restoration during summer breaks.

Families planning summer getaways during the peak UK school holiday period, from mid-July to the end of August, often face crowded resorts and higher prices. However, a new study has identified quieter alternatives that offer a more relaxed holiday experience without sacrificing sun, sea, or scenery.

Travel experts at Solmar Villas analysed more than 160 destinations worldwide to identify locations that remain relatively uncrowded during this busy travel period.

Each destination received a crowd avoidance score based on seven key factors linked to peak season visitor pressure

  1. Peak season tourist surge
  2. Tourist to resident ratio
  3. Beach crowding
  4. Flight route busyness
  5. School holiday price inflation
  6. Local infrastructure capacity
  7. Off the beaten track feel

Factors were rated from one to five for a maximum total score of 35.

Mediterranean and staycation highlights

Greece leads the rankings for quieter summer escapes, with several islands offering stunning scenery without the heavy crowds found in more established tourist hotspots. Alonissos takes the top global position with a score of 31.5 out of 35.

Spain also performs strongly, claiming 4th place in the top 15. El Hierro, the smallest of the Canary Islands, ranks 2nd with a score of 31.0, while La Gomera is 5th on 30.4.

For travellers looking closer to home, Isle of Harris in UK ranks joint 6th with a score of 30.1. Its white-sand beaches, dramatic landscapes, and low population density make it one of the country’s most peaceful summer staycation destinations.

Several clear trends emerge from the analysis. Spain is the most represented country overall, with five destinations featured in the rankings, while Greece accounts for 20% of the top-ranked locations.

Around two-thirds of the destinations listed are islands, suggesting that smaller island communities may offer a quieter alternative to larger mainland resorts during peak travel periods. The rankings also highlight a range of long-haul destinations in Thailand, Vietnam, Brazil, Namibia, and the Caribbean that appear well suited to travellers looking to avoid peak-season crowds.

Sharon Bradbury, travel expert at Solmar Villas, commented on the findings: “Many families do not have the option of travelling outside the school holidays, so choosing the right destination becomes even more important. What stands out from this research is that some of the world’s most enjoyable summer destinations do not necessarily attract the biggest crowds. Places such as Alonissos, Skopelos, and El Hierro offer beautiful scenery and plenty to see and do, but without the feeling that you are competing for space everywhere you go.”

“For families looking to make the most of their summer break, it can be worth looking beyond the usual hotspots. A quieter destination often means a more relaxed experience from the moment you arrive.”
