Poppy Tops List of Autumn Inspired Baby Names as Parents Turn to Nature

Poppy has emerged as the most popular autumn-inspired baby name for girls in England and Wales, according to an analysis of official statistics, with Ivy and Sienna also ranking highly.

Researchers at Solitaire Bliss examined the latest top 100 baby girl and boy names recorded by the Office for National Statistics for births in England and Wales in 2025. They identified names with clear connections to autumn, including seasonal colours, plants, wildlife, and traditions.

Poppy ranked 1st among girls, with 1,789 registrations, followed by Ivy with 1,698, and Sienna with 1,530. Rowan was the leading autumn-inspired name for boys, with 1,398 registrations.

A spokesperson for Solitaire Bliss said: “For new parents, finding the right name for their child can be tricky, with ideas and inspiration coming from all directions. However, choosing a name that reflects their season of birth is a great way to honour and celebrate the time of year in a whole new way.”

“Plus, autumn is clearly a great source of inspiration for thousands of parents. It is interesting to see how many of the autumn names are rooted in nature and the British landscape, from rowan berries to hazel and ivy. It suggests parents are drawing on the natural landscape around them rather than simply picking a colour or a mood.”

The top 10 autumn inspired baby names

Poppy: 1,789 baby girls

Poppy has strong autumn associations through its use as an emblem linked to Remembrance Day in November. Poppy seeds are also sown in autumn because they need cold weather to produce a strong bloom the following spring.

Ivy: 1,698 baby girls

Ivy is one of the last major plants to flower in the British year, blooming from September – November when little else does. It then carries black berries through autumn and winter, making it a distinctive seasonal foliage plant.

Sienna: 1,530 baby girls

Burnt sienna is a warm reddish-brown shade associated with autumn landscapes and changing leaves. The earthy colour is also popular in fashion during the season.

Rowan: 1,398 baby boys

The rowan, also known as mountain ash, produces scarlet berries from late August through October. It is a characteristic tree of the British autumn hedgerow.

Willow: 1,384 baby girls

Willow trees are among the last to lose the green colour from their leaves as autumn begins. When the leaves eventually change, they turn a vibrant, warm yellow, making the trees distinctive among autumn foliage.

Oakley: 1,377 baby boys

Oakley derives from Old English words meaning oak tree clearing or oak meadow. Oak trees develop amber and brown leaves in autumn and produce acorns that fall during the season, making them a familiar symbol of seasonal change.

Olive: 892 baby girls

Olive green has become a popular autumnal shade for fashion and furnishings. Olives are also typically harvested between October and November.

Hazel: 638 baby girls

Hazelnuts ripen from September and are commonly used in autumnal recipes. Hazel is also associated with the golden-brown colour of turning leaves.

Hunter: 595 baby boys

The Hunter’s Moon is the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon in the lunar cycle and usually occurs in October, contributing to the name’s autumnal association.

Scarlett: 496 baby girls

Scarlet is a deep, vivid red shade often seen among fallen leaves, particularly on trees such as maple and oak. The colour is also associated with earlier sunsets and autumnal colour palettes.

All the names appear in the ONS overall top 100 for births in England and Wales in 2025. The findings show that nature and landscape references remain prominent among popular baby names, with choices such as Poppy, Ivy, and Rowan reflecting the continuing appeal of the British countryside and seasonal cycles.

For parents looking for autumn-inspired names this September, the rankings highlight established choices that already feature prominently in official birth data.
