Lily topped the ranking with 2,249 registrations. Poppy followed with 1,789, Sienna with 1,530, Daisy with 1,454, and Olive with 892.

La Planque Du Joueur analysed more than 50 summer-inspired names using the ONS dataset.

Jean Morlec, founder of La Planque Du Joueur, said: “What is particularly revealing is that parents in England and Wales appear to embrace summer imagery most readily when it is presented through a familiar and established name. Lily, Poppy, Daisy, Rose, and Iris all have obvious links to flowers and the natural world, but they also sound recognisable, versatile, and easy to imagine on both a child and an adult.”

Morlec continued: “The rarest names make their seasonal connections much more direct. Bay, Shelly, Cove, Kai, and Coral evoke the coast, while Sol, Soleil, and Solana focus strongly on sunlight. Peach represents a summer fruit, August names a summer month, and Sunny describes the brightness of the season itself.”

“The origins of the names also show the wide variety of ways parents can capture the atmosphere of summer. Some names come from ancient words for flowers, colours, water, or the sun, while others developed from geographical features, months, or familiar English nature words.”

“This suggests that the popularity of a nature name is not determined by imagery alone. Parents appear to balance originality against familiarity, choosing names that feel distinctive without feeling difficult to wear. The most successful summer-inspired names create a mood suggesting flowers, light, warmth, water, and outdoor beauty while still functioning naturally as first names.”

The ONS released its 2025 baby names data on 9th July 2026, confirming Lily as the second most popular girls’ name overall, behind Olivia.

Many of the popular names have seasonal associations. Lily, Poppy, Daisy, Rose, and Iris are linked to flowers, while Olive evokes Mediterranean landscapes. Rarer choices such as Sol and Soleil reference the sun, Bay and Cove evoke the coast, and Sunny reflects bright summer weather.
