Millennials and Families Lead Surge in Last-Minute Airport Transfers

With summer travel plans in full swing, Google searches for “airport transfers” have surged by 25% to 374,000 per month, reflecting Brits’ eagerness to organise holidays abroad. Exclusive booking data from global airport transfer platform Welcome Pickups offers fresh insight into the booking habits of UK travellers, revealing Millennials and families as the most likely to arrange transfers at the last minute.

Demographic trends show distinct booking patterns

  • Travellers aged 31–45, primarily Millennials, account for 35% of transfer bookings made within 12 hours of departure or arrival, and 33% of those made 12 to 24 hours in advance.
  • Gen Z, aged 18–30, follows closely, making up 25% of bookings within 12 hours and 19% of those between 12 and 24 hours.
  • Older travellers, aged 56 and above, are the least likely to book last-minute, with only 18% of bookings within 12 hours and 24% within 12 to 24 hours, preferring to plan ahead, with 49% booking over a month in advance.

Surprisingly, families, often assumed to be meticulous planners, are among the biggest last-minute bookers. Of bookings made within 12 hours of travel, 48% are couples, 33% are families, and 19% are friends. This trend challenges expectations, as families face greater risks from disorganised travel plans.

Alex Trimis, CEO and founder of Welcome Pickups, attributes these patterns to evolving travel behaviours. “This data reflects broader post-pandemic travel planning patterns where consumers have been prioritising flexibility over advance savings,” he says. However, he warns that last-minute bookings can carry a hefty cost. “Last-minute bookings can see prices increase by 25-30% in peak periods like Easter and over the summer travel period, and surge by up to 50% in some cities.” Trimis predicts that with premiums for last-minute bookings expected to rise to 20% by 2026, cost-conscious travellers may soon shift to earlier planning.

Psychological factors explain these booking habits. Registered psychologist Dr Carolyne Keenan highlights several reasons why families and Millennials delay booking airport transfers:

  • Cognitive overload and decision fatigue. Planning a family trip can feel like a logistical marathon. Parents are juggling flights, accommodation, packing for multiple people, and making sure no one forgets their passport or favourite teddy. In that mental overload, secondary tasks like airport travel often get pushed down the list. It’s not about carelessness, it’s about cognitive bandwidth being maxed out.
  • False sense of control. People often assume airport transfers are easy to sort, “We’ll just grab a taxi,” or “We’ll ask a friend.” Because it feels like a flexible, last-minute task, it doesn’t get prioritised early on. That illusion of control can lead to delays in decision-making, especially when the bigger, more complex tasks have already drained mental energy.
  • Emotional depletion and avoidance. Families under travel stress may avoid adding one more thing to think about. Booking travel can become something they postpone until absolutely necessary, not because it’s unimportant, but because they’re already stretched emotionally and mentally.
  • The Millennial mindset. Millennials, who now make up a large portion of travelling parents, are used to flexible, on-demand services. This generation grew up with apps, instant booking, and the belief that most problems can be solved at the tap of a screen. That cultural conditioning can make last-minute planning feel less risky, even when kids are involved.

Dr Keenan concludes: “In short, what looks like irrational behaviour often makes perfect sense once you consider the mental load, emotional state, and habits of the people involved. It’s a reminder that even with the best intentions, our brains often don’t behave in perfectly rational ways, especially under pressure!”
