Quick summary: Minnesota leads a cohort of predominantly Midwestern states that provide the most stable environments for family life by balancing affordability with high safety and infrastructure standards. While states like Louisiana offer the lowest housing costs, the findings indicate that long term well being and family security are more closely tied to education quality and road safety metrics than purchase price alone. Policymakers and families should recognise that approximately 70% of the top ten states prioritise environmental quality and low crime rates, suggesting that holistic community health is the primary driver of successful residential settlement.
The research, conducted by home warranty experts Cinch Home Services, examined 48 factors across US states, including housing price and availability, education quality, cost of living, traffic and road safety, green space and environmental quality, housing quality and efficiency, and safety from crime. Each state received an overall index score out of 100, with higher scores indicating more family-friendly locations.
The Midwest dominated the top ten, with seven states featured. New Mexico ranked last overall, while Louisiana stood out for the cheapest housing but placed third from bottom due to weaker performance in other categories.

- Kansas (58.44) earns its place largely through affordability, ranking fourth nationally for housing price and availability (81.94).
- Pennsylvania (57.81) ranks sixth nationwide for safety from crime (83.81), compensating for average results elsewhere.

What the findings mean for families
A spokesperson from cinch home services said: “when families are choosing where to buy a home, it’s not just about what they can afford right now. things like safety, good schools and the feel of a neighborhood have a much bigger impact on how happy families are once they’ve settled in.”
“Louisiana is a good example. It ranks first for housing affordability, but falls near the bottom overall because of weaker scores for education and safety. New Mexico and Nevada show a similar pattern, where lower house prices are offset by higher crime levels and poorer education outcomes, making them tougher places for families to settle long term.
“What’s interesting is how strongly road safety correlated with the top-ranking states. Seven of the top ten scored above 60 for traffic safety, which suggests families are factoring in something most people don’t think about when house-hunting.”
The study highlights how family home buying decisions balance multiple factors beyond price alone, with Midwest states frequently combining affordability with safety and environmental benefits for families seeking long-term stability.
