International Arts Contest Launches Call for Mental Illness Stories Through Photography, Film, and Music

An international arts competition has opened its annual call for entries, inviting photographers, filmmakers, and musicians with lived experience of mental health challenges to share their stories through creative work.

Call for entries now open

Now in its eighth year, Out From The Mist is accepting submissions from artists around the world. Entries open on 1st July and close on 28th August 2026.

The competition is hosted by the Mental Illness Fellowship of Australia (MIFA) and has developed into a globally recognised platform for creative storytelling, with entries received from 29 countries and audiences reached both in Australia and internationally.

Platform for lived experience storytelling

Out From The Mist aims to provide a space for people to express experiences of mental illness through creative mediums, particularly when those experiences are difficult to describe in words.

One previous entrant said: “I feel like this is one of the most important projects within the arts right now. Even though mental illness feels isolated and individual, it is, however, a globally growing issue. I’m proud to participate in this project, as it holds the highest value to me.”

Programme manager Ilyse Elphick said many participants find creative expression especially valuable. “Art creates another way to be heard. Through a photograph, a piece of music, or a short film, people can share experiences that are often invisible and help others feel less alone.”

She added: “Every entry represents someone choosing to share a part of themselves with the world.”

“These stories help audiences understand mental illness in a different way. They move beyond statistics and headlines, creating opportunities for empathy, connection, and hope.”

Categories and prizes

Submissions are open across three categories

  • Photography
  • Short film
  • Original music

More than $10,000 in prizes will be awarded across the categories. Entrants will also receive personalised feedback from industry judges.

The competition is open to all skill levels, and discounted entry options are available to reduce financial barriers to participation.

The judging panel includes figures from Australia’s creative industries, including photographer Steve Parish OAM and producer Laura Waters.

Exhibition and international reach

The competition concludes with a major exhibition and awards night in Brisbane during Queensland Mental Health Week, with the event livestreamed internationally.

Selected works have previously been shown at conferences and exhibitions, including the Global Mental Health Community Summit in Germany.

Since launching in 2019, participants have consistently reported that the creative process supports reflection, connection, and engagement with wider mental health discussions.

The competition is organised by the (MIFA), which has supported mental health advocacy since 1986. The initiative forms part of its wider work to reduce stigma and promote understanding through community and creative expression.
