Quick summary: An unprecedented red warning for extreme heat across England and Wales has prompted beauty experts to advise consumers against applying heavy cosmetic layers that trap sweat and cause severe skin irritation. Dermatological guidance highlights that transitioning to minimal layers of waterproof products and lightweight skin tints prevents product breakdown while reducing the risk of heatwave-induced breakouts and clogged pores. For public health and personal well-being, adopting these simplified, breathable skincare practices during intense thermal events is essential towards mitigating dermatological stress, maintaining individual confidence, and supporting positive mental health.
A rare red warning for extreme heat has been issued across parts of England and Wales as temperatures are set to reach up to 39°C or higher over the next few days.
Many people will be looking for ways to keep their makeup looking fresh as temperatures skyrocket. The combination of extreme heat and humidity can often be a disaster for makeup, causing products to separate and smudge throughout the day. Annabelle Taurua, a beauty expert at Fresha, has recommended several essential tips to help prevent makeup from melting away in the heatwave.
Prioritise skincare prep
During extreme temperatures, wearing heavy layers of makeup can make skin more susceptible to breakouts and irritation. Always start by cleansing with cleansing water, and simplify your skincare routine by avoiding exfoliating acids, heavy moisturisers, and retinol. Stick to a lightweight hydrating serum, plenty of SPF, and finish with a light moisturiser, ideally one that contains SPF, to help keep skin feeling fresh throughout the day.
Switch to skin tints
Foundation products are more likely to separate and melt during hot weather, which is why skin tints are recommended as an alternative. They feel lighter on the skin, are less likely to separate when mixed with sweat and oil, and avoid the risk of looking cakey and patchy. Skin tints also sit more comfortably over suncream, helping to avoid that heavy, congested feeling when skincare, SPF, and makeup are layered together. They are also easier to touch up throughout the day.
Use a mattifying primer and long wear foundation
Applying a quality mattifying primer before any other products creates a barrier between skin oils and makeup, helping it stay in place for longer. Primers work best when allowed to set for one minute before other cosmetics are applied.
For those who prefer more coverage than skin tints offer, a long-wear foundation is recommended over a regular one. Modern long-wear foundations contain polymers that bond to the skin and resist heat-related breakdown, typically lasting 8–12 hours, even in warm conditions, when properly set with powder. Foundations containing SPF offer an additional layer of sun protection during hot weather.
Apply products in minimal layers
Heat causes makeup layers to mix and slide, so using fewer, thinner layers allows each product to set properly. Waterproof mascara, eyeliner, and other cosmetics resist sweat and humidity better than regular formulations.
Set and maintain your makeup correctly
Most people apply setting spray incorrectly, reducing its effectiveness. For best results, hold the bottle at least 20 cm from the face and apply it in an X and T motion for complete coverage. Blotting papers are also useful for dabbing oily areas to absorb excess moisture without disturbing makeup, making them ideal for long-wear use during hot weather.
Store products in a cool place
Lipsticks, cream products, and foundations benefit from cooler storage temperatures, which help preserve their consistency. Keeping them in the fridge or another cool location, rather than in a makeup bag or bathroom cabinet, is advised during a heatwave.
Taurua said: “During a heatwave, the biggest mistake people make is trying to fix melting makeup by adding more product on top. Reapplying powder or foundation throughout the day might feel like a quick solution, but it can quickly cause makeup to look patchy and cakey.
“During high temperatures, how you prep your skin before applying any makeup is essential for extending the longevity of certain beauty products. Ensure that you are using light, moisturising products during your skincare routine, and avoid any harsh exfoliating acids.
“To avoid breakouts or irritation during warmer weather, it is recommended that you keep your skincare routine light and breathable and avoid using products that can trap sweat.”
“Remember that the key to heat-proof makeup is not about wearing more; it is about mindful application. Thin layers, targeted coverage, and products that are designed to withstand sweat and humidity will always perform better than a full face of heavy makeup in hot temperatures.
“Keep in mind that blotting is also far more effective than repeatedly topping up with powder. The goal should be to remove excess oil without disturbing the makeup underneath rather than building up layers that are likely to break down after a few hours.”
