With the milder weather returning and snow and ice thawing, dog owners are trading slippery walks for muddy ones. While this shift may be welcomed by many, it brings new challenges for pet owners trying to keep their homes free of muddy paw prints. Recognising this, pet insurance provider Waggel collaborated with interior designer Molly Woodward-Moor to share stylish yet practical tips for safeguarding homes against the inevitable mess.
In addition, veterinary surgeon Aimee Warner has highlighted why drying dogs properly after wet walks is crucial for their health, making these insights especially helpful for new dog owners.
8 Stylish ways to protect your home
- Choose pet-resistant fabrics. Wet dogs often leave fur and moisture behind on furniture. Molly advises avoiding fabrics like velvet, chenille, and silk, as these are prone to damage. Instead, opt for durable options such as leather, synthetic fibres, or smooth tapestries. Adding washable throws or blankets can protect your sofa while introducing seasonal colours.
- Opt for waterproof flooring. Molly recommends flooring options like natural stone or porcelain tiles, which can handle spills, muddy paw prints, and water splashes. “Stone tiles should be sealed to prevent water absorption over time,” she notes, ensuring they remain a practical yet stylish choice.
- Elevate delicate decor. Wagging tails and muddy paws can wreak havoc on fragile decor. Molly suggests placing delicate items and artwork on higher shelves or using alcoves to keep them safe, preserving your home’s aesthetics without compromising on personal touches.
- Create a mudroom or entryway. For homes with space, a mudroom can serve as a containment zone for post-walk cleaning. “Incorporate storage units for wet leads and coats, and use earthy colours to hide muddy marks,” Molly advises. Functional additions like shoe storage and wipeable surfaces make this area practical and easy to maintain.
- Strategically place pet bowls. To minimise water mess, Molly suggests tucking pet bowls under cabinetry or placing them in discreet corners. This simple adjustment ensures a tidy kitchen without sacrificing your pet’s convenience.
- Choose pet-friendly wall finishes. Walls are often a target for splashes and smudges. For areas frequented by pets, Molly recommends acrylic eggshell paint, which is both moisture-resistant and wipeable, offering a durable solution for busy households.
- Select darker wall colours. Avoid light paint shades that easily show dirt and moisture. Molly suggests taupe, grey, or earthy hues, which can disguise imperfections while maintaining a stylish interior.
- Invest in a stylish pet bed. To balance comfort and design, Molly advises selecting a moisture-resistant pet bed that complements your decor. This ensures your dog’s resting area blends seamlessly into the room while remaining practical and easy to clean.
The health risks of not drying your dog properly
Veterinary surgeon Aimee Warner warns that improper drying after wet walks can lead to health issues, many of which can be costly and uncomfortable for pets.
“Moisture trapped under fur creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, leading to infections such as hot spots,” explains Aimee. Wet coats can also promote fungal infections, causing itching, redness, and odours that require medical treatment.
Other risks include skin irritation, hypothermia in colder weather, and matted fur, which can tug at the skin and cause pain. Aimee advises, “Pay attention to areas where moisture can accumulate, such as between the toes, under the belly, and around the ears.”
Proper care ensures that pets remain healthy and homes stay clean, striking the perfect balance for dog owners everywhere.
