Frank Ocean has the largest vocabulary among major acts on the current Billboard Artist 100, while PinkPantheress has the smallest, according to a study by transcription company Ditto Transcripts.
Analysts examined the 100 top acts on the Billboard chart using song lyrics sourced from Genius. Each artist was assessed using a standardised sample of their 10,000 most recent lyrical words, with the number of unique words used to calculate vocabulary size.
Frank Ocean recorded 2,108 unique words in his sample, more than three times the total of PinkPantheress, who ranked last in the study with 628 unique words.

Genre trends and insights
The research found distinct vocabulary patterns across musical styles. Hip hop artists averaged the highest lexical variety at 1,635 unique words, while pop acts averaged the lowest at 1,256.
Ben Walker, CEO of Ditto Transcripts, provided context on how vocabulary can shape commercial appeal: “The most popular songs are sometimes the simplest because repetition is what makes a chorus stick in your head. Pop songs tend to have the fewest unique words, with artists in this genre having an average of 1,256 unique words within their most recent 10,000.”
“Looking at the top 10 ranking, it’s clear that hip-hop artists have the largest vocabularies, which makes sense for a genre known for dense wordplay. The hip-hop artists in the study have the largest average vocabulary of any genre at 1,635 unique words, ahead of rock and country.”
“An artist’s talent or popularity is not determined by their number of unique words, which has been made clear by the huge variation in vocabulary size across the Billboard 100.”
