Edinburgh Festival Fringe to Host UK 1st as Purpose Built Sauna Theatre Joins Summerhall Arts Line Up

Quick summary: The introduction of the world’s first purpose built Sauna Theatre at the 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe represents a pioneering integration of cultural performance and physiological wellness that leverages the stress reducing benefits of heat to deepen audience engagement. By combining storytelling with the established health advantages of sauna rituals, this initiative offers a unique model for supporting mental well being and social connection within the arts sector. This interdisciplinary approach highlights a broader shift in public policy towards multifunctional community spaces that prioritise holistic health, suggesting that future healthcare and cultural practices could successfully merge to combat urban isolation and enhance long term quality of life.

The 2026 Edinburgh Festival Fringe will feature a world first with the arrival of a Sauna Theatre at Summerhall Arts. Developed by Sauna Sessions Arts Club, the venue is described as the UK’s largest sauna and the first purpose-built structure designed specifically for theatre, art, and cultural performance.

Concept and creators

The project was conceived by director James Grieve and designer Lucy Osborne, who previously collaborated on Roundabout for Paines Plough. Their new venture combines theatre, literature, music, and Aufguss, an immersive sauna ritual involving heat, essential oils, towel work, and storytelling.

The organisers describe the experience as one where physiological effects of heat, such as increased endorphins, relaxed muscles, and improved blood flow, enhance audience focus and sensory engagement.

Sauna Theatre experience and programme

The Sauna Theatre will operate as an 80-person capacity venue, aiming to accommodate both regular sauna users and first time visitors seeking cultural experiences in a wellness setting.

The programme includes a range of events, from early morning sessions to late night performances, blending performance, music, literature, and ritual.

A growing UK sauna culture forms part of the wider context, with the number of public saunas in the UK reported to have doubled year on year since 2018 as interest in wellness experiences increases.

Location and partnership

The venue will be based in the Summerhall rear courtyard throughout the Fringe. The collaboration between Sauna Sessions Arts Club and Summerhall Arts was developed through a shared interest in experimental and interdisciplinary performance. The project also marks a return to the courtyard where Grieve and Osborne previously launched Roundabout in 2014.

Statements from the creators

James Grieve and Lucy Osborne, Co-Creative Directors, said: “We are beyond excited to bring two things we are deeply passionate about together in the UK’s first Sauna Theatre. We know profoundly the power of theatre to connect people, fire imaginations, broaden horizons and engender happiness. We think combining the enrichment of art and culture with the incredible health and well-being boost of sauna will double the benefits and double the joy.”

Summerhall Arts CEO Sam Gough described the project as “sheer genius”.

He said: “It is a brilliant, brave and fun programme of work delivered in the most beautiful and innovative way. Imagine spending the Fringe ingesting this great work whilst expelling all of the stress and toxins from your body.”
