As childcare pressures increase and busy modern lifestyles make family get-togethers less frequent, demand for multigenerational holidays is growing. UK Google searches for “large family holiday” have risen by 252% compared with last year, while a recent study by Parkdean Resorts found that 70% of British parents would be interested in taking a multigenerational holiday, with 17% already planning one this year.
According to the study, the biggest benefit of a multigenerational holiday is grandparents and grandchildren spending quality time together and creating new memories (53%). This is followed by lower holiday costs (20%) and sharing childcare responsibilities (19%). More than half (57%) of parents said they believe a multigenerational holiday would save them money.
For families living apart, multigenerational holidays offer an opportunity to spend time together before busy schedules get in the way. Around a 3rd (34%) of British parents already take one every year, while a further 46% wish they did.
A spokesperson at Parkdean Resorts explained why multi-generational travel is on the rise: “With travel disruptions and rising fuel costs driving demand for UK staycations over holidaying abroad this summer, we’re seeing more and more families opting to stay closer to home. Multi-generational holidays offer a way to spend quality time together and make special memories. We’re seeing a rise in families choosing to do a large annual family holiday as a way to guarantee everyone’s attendance and ensure everyone gets together at least once a year. As modern life gets busier, family visits can often be fleeting, so planning a week-long trip with everyone ensures that valuable quality time.”
“As well as creating a chance for grandparents to spend quality time with their grandchildren, the added benefit of childcare and those extra pairs of hands are playing a part in the surge in demand, as well as helping reduce the cost per person of the trip. Booking a large holiday lodge for everyone can work out really cost effective, and even if people want to do their own thing, everyone can regroup there at the end of the day. Another great option for larger families is self-catering. Not only does it help manage costs and keep everyone happy, but it allows for maximum family time together.”
With over half (58%) of parents saying they would be more likely to go on a multigenerational holiday in the UK than abroad, Parkdean has shared its recommended destinations for a family-friendly staycation.
Lake District
A Lake District holiday is one of those trips that truly offers something for every generation, especially for families who enjoy adventure sports and outdoor activities. The region’s lakes provide an ideal setting for sailing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and other water sports, as well as land-based activities such as mountain biking and hiking. For a less adrenaline-fuelled experience, families can explore the Lake District on foot or enjoy a scenic boat cruise.
The region offers a mix of historic market towns and charming villages, including bustling Ambleside, the largely pedestrianised Keswick, and scenic Grasmere. There are also plenty of attractions for children, including The World of Beatrix Potter, as well as numerous shops, bars, and restaurants where parents can enjoy a well-deserved break.
Cornwall
Cornwall offers a wide range of attractions, heritage sites, and historic landmarks for the whole family, from the awe-inspiring biomes of the Eden Project to the legendary Tintagel Castle, long associated with King Arthur. During the warmer months, the county’s world-famous beaches provide the perfect balance of activities and relaxation, allowing every generation to enjoy time together in one place.
East Anglia
With hundreds of miles of coastline stretching from Mablethorpe to Lowestoft and abundant wildlife, East Anglia is an ideal destination for multigenerational holidays. The region offers a wide range of family-friendly attractions, from the late Queen’s country retreat at Sandringham to Merrivale Model Village and Hemsby Mega Maze, alongside traditional seaside resorts such as Great Yarmouth and Hunstanton that parents and grandparents may remember from their own childhoods.
