Cyprus Emerges as a Budget-Friendly Ski Destination, But Experts Warn Against One Costly Mistake

Cyprus is widely known as a summer holiday hotspot, attracting British tourists with its sun-drenched beaches and picturesque coastal towns such as Paphos and Limassol. But he Mediterranean island has an unexpected winter appeal, offering one of the most affordable ski destinations in Europe.

Travel insurance provider Staysure has highlighted the Troodos Mountains, located at the island’s centre, as a hidden gem for skiers and snowboarders seeking an alternative to pricier European resorts. With ski season running from December to April, February is often considered the ideal time to take advantage of the slopes.

A surprising winter sports destination

Temperatures in the Troodos Mountains can plummet to –5C at night, with daytime highs of around 4C. Snow depths can reach up to 2.5 metres on the highest peak, Mount Olympus, which stands at 1,952 metres. Just below the peak, Troodos Square serves as a key hub for winter sports enthusiasts, offering access to a ski hut at Sun Valley, where visitors can hire equipment and purchase ski passes.

Compared to popular Alpine resorts, skiing in Cyprus is significantly more affordable. A one-day ski pass costs just 20 euros, a fraction of the 70 euros charged at many European ski resorts. This makes it an attractive option for budget-conscious adventurers seeking quality slopes without the hefty price tag.

A crucial travel mistake to avoid

While Cyprus presents an appealing ski destination, Staysure urges travellers to secure proper winter sports insurance before embarking on their trip. A spokesperson from the company explained the risks: “It’s important to have a specific winter sports travel insurance policy in place that is tailored to your needs. Your winter sports cover protects against the risks that come with snow, ice, and high altitudes. This includes loss, theft, or damage to equipment and ski passes, unused ski school or ski instructor fees, as well as coverage for avalanches and landslides. More importantly, it also protects you from high-cost medical bills if you need emergency treatment while away. For instance, if you had an accident on the slopes, you may be airlifted off the mountain by helicopter to a medical facility, which can see medical costs quickly spiral.”

The warning is particularly relevant as ski holiday searches have surged to a five-year high on Google Trends, indicating strong demand for winter sports getaways. February, with its optimal snow conditions, presents a prime opportunity for British travellers to explore the Cypriot slopes. However, without adequate insurance, what appears to be a cost-effective ski holiday could turn into a financial burden.

Whether for seasoned skiers or first-time snowboarders, ensuring the right coverage is in place is crucial. “Winter sports insurance is there to protect you against specific risks that aren’t usually covered in standard travel insurance policies,” the Staysure spokesperson added. “If you’re looking to hit the slopes anytime soon, research the type of cover you’ll need to ensure you’re fully protected against unforeseen circumstances.”

With its scenic mountain terrain, budget-friendly prices, and growing popularity among winter sports enthusiasts, Cyprus is carving out a niche as a must-visit ski destination. But travellers should take heed; cutting costs on insurance could prove to be the most expensive mistake of all.
