Charity Auctions at East London Pub to Support Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Causes

The Angel of Bow in East London is launching a series of bimonthly charity auctions featuring interior items on Saturday 18th April.

The Bow pub is known for its mix of furnishings and one-off pieces that have been hand-picked and restored. Visitors often comment on the distinctive atmosphere created by these items.

The auctions will reflect this style, offering artwork, furniture, mirrors and objet d’art. Pieces will range from the Georgian period to Victorian and Edwardian eras, alongside contemporary works. A key attraction is expected to be hand-painted furniture created by the pub’s in-house professional furniture artist.

10% of each sale will go to Shine, the UK’s leading charity supporting people affected by spina bifida, hydrocephalus and related conditions affecting the brain and spine. The organisation provides specialist support, advice and community services across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The event is open to both experienced bidders and newcomers. Visitors can view items and check guide prices before bidding begins at 6:30 pm, or simply attend to observe the auction.

Lots include a wide range of lamps, from classical designs to porcelain cherubs, Victorian-style pieces and art deco examples. Among the more unusual items is a Spanish dancer porcelain lamp stand reminiscent of 1970s holiday souvenirs. The auction will also feature artwork spanning ethnic designs, Victoriana, life sketches and paintings inspired by artists such as Turner, alongside a collection of classic Beatrix Potter prints aimed at children and collectors.

Furniture and mirrors will also feature prominently. Highlights include ornate gilt-framed mirrors and several upcycled pieces, such as a linen press painted deep blue with gilt lettering listing garments including gowns, coats and riding habits. A converted dresser redesigned as an apothecary-style cabinet will also be offered, along with a chest of drawers decorated with a woodland scene suitable for a child’s room or nursery.

The Angel of Bow is located at 171 Devons Road, London E3 3QX, a five-minute walk from Devons Road DLR station. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

Visitors can sample a selection of craft beers across 22 taps, including rotating brews from East London producers and the pub’s own Angel of Bow lager brewed in nearby Leyton. A range of wines and spirits is also available.

Food is prepared on site, with a seasonal menu that changes weekly and uses ingredients sourced from local suppliers.

The first auction takes place on Saturday 18th April, with viewing ahead of bidding at 6:30 pm. No booking is required, and further auctions will be held every two months.

The initiative combines the pub’s focus on interior design with fundraising for a charity supporting people with complex neurological conditions.
