Bell Bottom Nails Set to Become Next Major Nail Trend, Say Beauty Experts

Move over almond and square nails. A new shape is making its way onto the beauty radar, with experts predicting that bell bottom nails could become the next major manicure trend.

Inspired by the iconic flared silhouette of the 1970s, the trend sees nails gradually widen towards the tip to create a distinctive finish.

Google searches for flared nails have increased by 706% over the past year, suggesting the nostalgic shape could be about to have its moment.

Annabelle Taurua, beauty expert at Fresha, says the trend taps into the continued appetite for nostalgic beauty while offering an alternative to the familiar shapes that have dominated in recent years.

Why are bell bottom nails gaining popularity?

“Bell bottom nails are a fun way to bring nostalgia into your manicure. The distinctive flared shape instantly gives the nails a retro feel, whilst still leaving plenty of room to experiment with colour, finishes, and nail art.”

“What makes this trend particularly interesting is the fact that it’s so different from the more streamlined nail shapes we’ve become accustomed to. After years of almond, oval, and square nails dominating, people are increasingly looking for shapes that feel more playful and expressive, and bell bottom nails definitely deliver that,” says Taurua.

The shape has a clear connection to 1970s fashion, when flared trousers were a defining feature of everyday and party looks. Beauty observers note that nostalgia can drive renewed interest in trends, with nails providing another way for people to express this influence.

The gradual widening towards the tip also creates a silhouette that stands apart from the tapered and straight-edged styles that have dominated salon bookings in recent seasons.

How can you make a flared nail work for everyday wear?

While a full, exaggerated bell bottom shape can create a statement manicure, it may not be the most practical option for everyday life. Taurua recommends adapting the shape for a more manageable finish.

“For those who love the look but want something more manageable, I’d recommend asking your nail technician for a much more subtle flare, keeping the sides only slightly wider towards the tip. This gives you the distinctive bell bottom silhouette without the extreme width, making it much easier to wear day to day.”

“You can also make the trend feel more wearable by keeping the length shorter and opting for a softer colour or simple finish. A neutral, milky, or sheer shade will make the unusual shape feel more understated, whereas a bold colour or nail art will really emphasise the retro feel.”

For another practical option, Taurua suggests creating the appearance of a flare through nail art rather than changing the actual shape of the nail. “You can ask your nail tech to create the illusion of a flare through nail art, rather than actually changing the shape of the nail.”

“Using a faux flare painting technique, the design gradually widens towards the tip of the nail, mimicking the silhouette of a flared nail. Think of a curved French tip or colour block that starts narrower at the base and fans out towards the free edge. The result gives you that distinctive bell bottom effect, without the extra width that can make a heavily flared nail less practical.”

Salon professionals point out that clients often have to balance their desire for novelty with everyday activities such as typing, cooking, and caring for young children. A softer flare or painted illusion can therefore provide a practical middle ground.

Neutral bases can keep the focus on the outline while allowing seasonal colours or subtle nail art. Those looking for a stronger statement can opt for richer tones or graphic patterns that highlight the widening tip.

Bell bottom nails offer a new take on retro beauty

The rise in searches for flared nails reflects wider interest in retro beauty references. As people experiment beyond familiar almond, oval, and square outlines, more playful and expressive shapes are gaining attention.

Beauty experts expect bell bottom nails to appear more frequently in salons and on social media in the coming months. Clients looking for a lower-maintenance option can request a subtle flare or faux version, while those wanting a bolder manicure can embrace the full silhouette.

Whether worn in its full form or adapted for everyday life, the trend offers an alternative to streamlined manicures, giving wearers another way to express their individual style through shape, colour, and nail art.
