A new analysis of Google search trends has found that Americans most frequently look online for guidance on how to apologise to their girlfriends, underscoring the complexities of romantic relationships in the digital age.
Research conducted by CustomWritings, an essay writing and academic support service, examined Google search volume data to identify apology-related phrases with the highest average monthly searches across the US. Romantic partners dominate the rankings, with queries about apologising to girlfriends leading by a substantial margin.

The study found the following phrases generate the highest average monthly searches:

- How to apologise to your boyfriend — 1,253 searches

Searches for “how to apologise to your girlfriend” exceed those for “how to apologise to your boyfriend” by more than 650 per month. The data also shows that apologies within dating relationships generate far more searches than those within marriage, with queries about apologising to wives recording 272 monthly searches.
Infidelity remains a significant concern, with “how to apologise for cheating” ranking third at 724 searches per month. Searches related to friendships, family relationships, and professional interactions appear lower in the rankings.
Notably, pet-related apologies feature in the top 10. “How to apologise to your cat” receives 164 monthly searches, surpassing searches for apologising to a customer.
Patric Johnson, head of CustomWritings Writing Center, commented on the findings. “One of the things that surprised me the most in this st udy was that Americans search for ‘how to apologise to your cat’ around 164 times each month. To put this into perspective, this beat searches for apologizing to husbands, bosses, and several other human relationships. This shows that pet owners take their animal relationships very seriously.”
Johnson added: “The high volume of searches related to romantic partners suggests these relationships often involve complex emotions that make apologies challenging.”
The study draws from aggregated Google search trends and reflects average monthly figures, which may fluctuate. However, the data consistently indicates that romantic apologies, particularly those involving girlfriends, generate the greatest demand for online guidance among Americans.
